What types of course activities can I conduct in Poll Everywhere?

Updated on

Poll Everywhere allows you to create a variety of question types. For more information on creating these activities, see this article.

Here are some ideas for using Poll Everywhere activities to increase engagement in your course.

Check-in questions

Poll Everywhere allows you to ask multiple-choice or open-ended questions. Check in with your students during class. Asking questions such as "How is your mood today?", "How are you feeling about this week's content?" can humanize the online classroom environment and help students to feel heard. You can even ask questions about how engaging students find the lesson content in order to know how to improve your own instruction.

Concept checks

Throughout the lecture, you can ask questions to see if students have understood the concepts you have discussed. This is a low-stakes way to immediately gauge how much your students have understood.

Attendance

Some instructors find it helpful to ask questions throughout class as a way to see which students are attending and actively participating. If you wish to use Poll Everywhere for this purpose, make sure to sync your Collab roster with Poll Everywhere so that students get credit for their participation.

Quizzes

You can create a series of questions which will be graded as a quiz. If you intend to grade student responses, make sure to sync your Collab roster with Poll Everywhere so that students get credit for their answers.

Friendly competitions

Poll Everywhere allows you to create a competition through a series of questions. This could be an engaging review activity before an exam or a way to give students a low-stakes means of assessing their own learning.

Discussion starters

Ask an open-ended question about a course reading or concept to spark a discussion. You are able to project students' answers and opinions on the screen so that students can see what their peers are thinking.

Asynchronous assignments or quizzes

You can schedule an activity to be open for a certain amount of time to allow students to complete a series of questions outside of class. If you intend to grade student responses, make sure to sync your Collab roster with Poll Everywhere so that students get credit for their answers.
