Creating an online assignment

Updated on

Note: In order for an assignment to be synced with the Collab Gradebook in the new (Spring 2021) Gradescope integration, you MUST link your assignment through the Lessons tool. Refer to this article for more information on linking your assignments.

Select "Assignments" from the left toolbar in Gradescope.

Scroll to the bottom and select "Create Assignment" from the bottom toolbar.

In the dialogue box that pops up (Collab users will need to scroll to the top to see this) select the Online Assignment type then click "Next."

A dialogue box with assignment settings will pop up. Type a title for your assignment. Select a release date and due date. Indicate whether or not you would like to allow late submissions, enforce a time limit, or enable group submission.

When you are satisfied with your settings, select "Create Assignment." (Remember, you can always go back to the assignment settings later to make changes.)

A screen will appear which will allow you to create questions for your online assignment. Give your question a title and select how many points it is worth. To choose the type of question it will be, select "Insert Field."

Add as many questions as you would like to the assignment by selecting the option "Add Question 2, etc."

You can choose from the following question types:

  • Short Answer--Give you question a name and point value, then type the question itself into the "Problem" box. Type your answer inside the parenthesis. You will see a preview of the question's appearance on the right.
  • Free response--Enter the question name and point value. Type the question into the "Problem" box. Since this is an open-ended question, you do not need to type an answer.
  • Multiple choice--Enter the title and point value for your question. Type the question itself in the "Problem" box. Indicate an incorrect answer by empty parentheses and a correct answer by an X inside of parentheses.
  • Multiple Select--Enter the title and point value for your question. Type the question itself in the "Problem" box. Indicate an incorrect answer by empty parentheses and a correct answer by an X inside of parentheses. You can have as many incorrect and correct choices as you would like.
  • File upload--Enter a title and point value for the question. In the "Problem" box, type the description of the file you would like uploaded. This can be any file type--a Word document, pdf, mp3, mp4, jpeg, etc.
    • (Note: Unlike with the other assignment types where you are able to annotate directly onto an uploaded pdf, the online assignment type will not allow you to directly write on a pdf or other uploaded file. If you need annotation capabilities on uploaded files, use either the Exam/Quiz or Homework/Problem Set assignment type.)

Add as many questions as you would like. You can enter multiple fields of response on one question. (For example, if you had a multiple choice question that you then wanted students to explain their reasoning for, insert a field for a multiple choice response and a field for a free response.) You can also create sub-questions as desired.

When you are done, select "Save Assignment."
