This article will provide a brief overview of where important tools are located within the Teams desktop app.
Left-hand navigation bar
The navigation bar on the left-hand side of the Teams app allows you to navigate through notifications, chats, assignments, etc. associated with ALL of your teams and contacts.
Activity
The Activity icon in the left navigation menu allows you to see recent activity across all of your teams. You will see updates, mentions, conversations, and other activity here. Clicking on the preview on the left will bring up a view of the team in the right-hand window so you can see the activity in context.
Chat
The Chat app allows you to hold a text, audio, or video conversation with any of your contacts or anybody at your organization. These conversations can either be one-on-one or in a group. Selecting or starting a conversation brings up options in the upper right hand corner to video call, audio call, or share your screen. Each chat also comes with its own set of tabs where you can chat, share files, view the hierarchy of your mutual organization, and see you contact's recent activity in mutual teams.
Teams
Double-clicking on the teams icon will bring up a page with all of your teams listed. From here you can open a specific team and view all of the content associated with that team.
(Note: Single-clicking on the teams icon will bring you to the team or main menu where you most recently were.)
Assignments
The Assignments app will open up a directory of all of your assignments across ALL of your teams.
Calendar
The Calendar app brings up your Microsoft calendar. The calendar is synced with each of your teams and will display all scheduled meetings from your teams. It is also synced with your associated Outlook calendar. From here you are also able to begin a meeting by clicking "Meet now" or schedule a meeting by clicking "New meeting."
Calls
The Calls app allows you to make calls to any of your contacts or anybody in your organization. You can leave voicemails and create group calls.
Files
The Files app allows you to view all your files from across ALL of your teams.
Ellipses
Clicking the ellipses will allow you to search through the apps in your teams.
Navigating within a specific team
By clicking on the Teams icon and navigating to a single team, you will be able to access all of the content associated with that team. Each team has a menu of channels on the left and a list of tabs for each channel across the top.
Posts tab
The Posts tab houses chats, announcements, and other communications relevant to that channel. Each channel will have a default Posts tab. (Note: General announcements related to the entire team will by default appear in the Posts tab of the General channel.)
Files tab
The Files tab houses the documents uploaded to or created in that channel. Each channel will have a default Files tab.
Class Notebook
The Class Notebook tab houses the OneNote file associated with the team. In the General channel, the Class Notebook tab will display all notebook content across all channels; the additional channels will only display the notebook content that is specifically in their channel. Each channel will have a default Class Notebook tab.
Assignments
The Assignments tab only appears in the General channel. It displays all the assignments in the team.
Grades
The Grades tab only appears in the General channel. It syncs with assignments to record student grades. (Note: It does not integrate with Collab or SIS.)
Additional tabs
You can add additional tabs in each channel as desired.
Channels
The channels appear on the left-hand side of the team screen. You can click on a channel to navigate to the specific resources associated with that channel. Some instructors find channels useful in creating course units or in organizing class groups.
