The following scenarios can be used when meeting with your TAs to discuss strategies for facilitating group work/ discussion.
Scenario #1: You are the TA for an all-online course. You sign onto Zoom and arrive within the group work/ discussion portion of an online learning space. Students are getting into their breakout rooms. You see another TA waiting in the main room. What do you do?
Scenario #2: The instructor of an online course asks students to: (a) work on a problem in small groups in breakout rooms; and (b) discuss their strategies in solving the problem with the entire class after they return to the main room. You circulate among the breakout rooms. One group you see works on the problem, then sits around and waits for the instructor to go over the answer. What could you do?
Scenario #3: The instructor asks a question in an online lecture and asks students to discuss it in pairs in breakout rooms. You circulate among the breakout rooms. In one room, you notice two students struggling and try to tell them how to do the problem. In another room, you notice another pair struggling with the same issue. You tell them how to do it as well. How can you ensure that the entire class hears common questions? What else could you be doing?
