How can I organize class time in a J-Term course?

Here are a few samples of instructional time distribution for short, online, intensive courses. These models assume four contact hours per day. In these models, contact hours include lecture, discussions, discussion board interactions, group work, and assessments.

Model 1: Large course (mix of lecture, discussion, and individual activities)

Model 2: Large course (mostly lecture, some discussion and individual activities)

1:30-2:00 Lecture 2 with Instructor Zoom (all students together)
2:00-3:00 Discussion 1 (includes time to work on and discuss individual research project w/ instructor and/or TAs) Zoom (each discussion section meet separately)

Model 3: Small course (mix of lecture and group project)

1:30-2:30 Session 3: Sharing updates on project, lecture OR occasional guest lecture Zoom
2:30-3:00 Session 4: Continued group project development Zoom (breakout rooms or student-led meetings)

Model 4: Small class (language class)
